What is ISO 14001 certification?

ISO 14001:2015 is an international standard that creates an effective environmental management system, manages environmental issues, ensures compliance, and addresses risks and opportunities in your operations. This certification is a strong environmental management standard that encourages continuous development in line with your environmental goals, and proactively identifies risk factors, opportunities, and problem areas.

The ISO 14001 standard, which is a member of the ISO 14000 family, works in unison with other standards, including ISO 9001, to ensure that your business provides high-quality products and services while taking a variety of environmental factors into account.

Prepare your ISO 14001 management system

If you are implementing an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) in your organisation and you’re preparing your organisation for an external audit, our ISO 14001 Gap Analysis Checklist will give you the list of items you need to prepare.

The first step in implementing an ISO management system in your organisation is to identify the gaps by comparing your current management systems with the ISO 14001:2015 requirements.

This is the first ISO certification attained by our company, and we initially felt a little daunted at the task. However, our auditor has been on the journey with us all the way, encouraged us/answered questions as required and where needed, given us constructive feedback. We were thrilled to get certified in ISO 14001 last year, and have just done our annual assessment and were again successful.

Got burning questions? We’ve got answers.

Consumer attitudes towards sustainability have significantly changed in the market today, making organisations dedicated to environmental goals more resilient. The strategic environmental management plan that comes with ISO 14001 certification gives your company a competitive advantage. By demonstrating your dedication to contemporary business principles, you not only distinguish yourself as an industry leader but also open doors to new opportunities, such as government tenders.

Although ISO 14001 certification is not a requirement in New Zealand, proactive businesses understand its value. Certification establishes credibility with customers and suppliers by demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility. It additionally creates an opportunity to apply for lucrative large tenders, which are frequently required to obtain certification. The internal audit process for ISO 14001 requires evidence of environmental commitment across the supply chain, encouraging continuous improvement outside of environmental considerations. The ISO principles guarantee strategic management plans that protect product or service quality while pursuing efforts to reduce environmental impact and continuously improve by being aligned with risk-based thinking.

The Environmental Management System standards family requires that your company take environmental concerns into account in order to minimise its impact. Internal operations, suppliers, and the final deliverable are all taken into account. In order to implement requirements, clauses must be broken down, creating the framework for your management system. By accomplishing these, you can prove compliance with the global standard for environmental management, demonstrate your dedication to environmental goals, and reduce negative effects.

The clauses are Context of the Organization (clause 4), Leadership (clause 5), Planning (clause 6), Support (clause 7), Operation (clause 8), Performance Evaluation (clause 9) and Improvement (clause 10).

The new ISO standard structure, Annex SL, is adhered to by ISO 14001:2015, enabling seamless integration with current global standards like ISO 9001, 45001, or 27001.

Obtaining certification to ISO standards has four steps:

  • Gap Analysis (Optional): to assess your environment management system against each clause of the standard, you can choose to perform an optional gap analysis at the start of the process.
  • Stage one: the required first step is an evaluation of your management system documentation, including policies, processes, management review records, scope, and context, against the standard. It lays the foundation for stage two.
  • Stage two: the second assessment is the last one before the initial certification process is complete. We must verify that the standard documented requirements are followed throughout the entire organisation to receive certification. We visit your locations and offices, as well as have conversations with relevant stakeholders in your business.
  • Certification: a “Statement of Certification” is issued after your stage two assessment has been verified and the procedure is finished, confirming compliance with the applicable standard. From the date of issue, this certification is valid for three years.

To keep your certification, you’ll need to conduct surveillance assessments on a regular basis.

The most recent version of ISO 14001 is ISO 14001: 2015, which emphasises a greater focus on risk-based thinking when it comes to environmental management in your company.

The goal of ISO 14001 training is to introduce your organisation to new operating procedures that ultimately improve environmental performance and help you achieve your environmental objectives. To do this, you must first understand the impact your organisation has on the environment.

As well as management techniques to reduce your environmental footprint, you’ll learn new ways to monitor and measure environmental performance and its impact.

When you receive ISO 14001 certification, it lasts for three years after it has been approved. Regular audits, also referred to as surveillance audits, are required for this certification in order to maintain it and keep it valid. Only IAF (International Accreditation Forum) certifications are affected by this.
